When
Tulare
City
School
District
decided
to
construct
the new
Heritage
Elementary
School on
an old
dairy
farm
site,
they
wanted a
school
that
would
strongly
represent
this
agricultural
community.
The
building’s
external
forms and
material
are
designed
to
integrate
with the
surrounding
agricultural
community
and are
reminiscent
of barns,
silos,
sheds and
windmill
structures
prevalent
in the
area.
|
| The
project
consists
of 24
classrooms,
six
kindergarten
classrooms,
a
multi-purpose
building,
administration
and media
center
building
and a
windmill
tower.
Each
classroom
building
consists
of 2
units of
4
classrooms
with the
teacher’s
workroom,
counseling
office,
restrooms
and other
support
facilities
conveniently
located
between
classroom
units.
A
computer
resource
room
serving
each
classroom
is set
diagonally
at the
center of
each
classroom
unit.
Teaching
walls are
designed
in all
classrooms
while
exposed
trusses,
ductwork
and
galvanized
finish
light
fixtures
add to
the
agricultural
theme.
The
barn-shaped
Multi-Purpose
building
is
designed
with a
serving
kitchen
at one
end and a
stage at
the other
end.
The
shape of
the
administration
office
building
is
reminiscent
of a
silo. A
high
clerestory
brings
light
into the
space.

Jurors
like the
way the
school
reflects
the
history
of the
site’s
farm
building
style
making it
very
simple
and
elegant.
They like
the
location
in the
community
and the
way
it’s
sited and
feel the
school is
very
inviting
for
children.
The
classroom
and
teacher
room
layout is
great and
they made
good use
of
natural
light. |
