Faced with no middle school, limited resources and a strong sense of community, a plan evolved wherein the K-12 campus concept would emerge with high school, middle school and elementary school adjacencies to promote shared resources including team and intergenerational teaching.  Success was achieved in balancing limited resources, desired educational programs, community interests, harsh climate conditions and operational concerns through a collaborative interactive design process that identified and resolved all interests.  The building orientation is sited linearly to capture a maximum sum of warmth and daylighting, and presents a knife-like form toward the prevailing winter winds to aid in snow removal by reducing drift areas.  Outdoor opportunities are set up with pull out plaza areas outside each classroom and large boulders placed to provide natural seating.
Jurors like this beautiful setting and site adaptation.  The school has a welcoming entrance and makes good use of exterior materials.  “Shared use of facilities with the elementary and high school is a great solution,” said one juror.
