San Mateo High School Reconstruction

San Mateo Union High School District

Bunton Clifford Associates, Inc.

The San Mateo School “Main Academic Building” and the “Arts & Sciences” building were originally constructed in 1926. After the local General Obligation Bond was passed in November 2000, the San Mateo Union High School District began plans for a campus-wide modernization of this historic campus. Testing by structural engineers discovered the 2 buildings were constructed of un-reinforced masonry and, after thorough evaluation of the options, the District Superintendent took a proactive approach to maintaining safety by condemning both buildings.  Taking into consideration the architectural significance of the campus to the community, the architectural firm worked with site committees, the DSA and the OPSC. The result was a new 140,000 square foot precast clad steel frame construction on two and one-half stories.  The “Main Academic Building” was reconfigured from its historic T-shape into a U-shaped structure, which addressed concerns generated by the Site Committee and students about the flow of the campus and the need for a central quad.
Jurors like the use of the original concept on this project and the way the redesign incorporates the student and staff wishes to go from a T-shape structure to a U-structure.  One juror commented, “I liked seeing the restoration and preservation of the school’s old style.”
