Parents and teachers along with a dynamic principal formed a small group to plan a much needed Library and Science Center.  After many meetings and debates, a finalized program was formulated and presented to District Trustee’s. The ambitious program was allowed to go forward on the proviso that the parents, teachers, and community leaders raise $2 million dollars through donations; in addition, major funds were available through the Office of Public School Construction Joint Use program.

After a series of conceptual approaches, it was agreed that the ideal complex could be formed with a modified “Z” shape. This form would create a series of outdoor spaces to be used as an auditorium with stage for the entire student body, and a lunch area adjacent to the existing cafeteria. The entire complex would be linked to the existing facility with covered walks providing protected access during inclement weather.  Additionally, the covered walks serve as window sun protection from the southern exposure and serve as a link for a series of lockable gates to secure the project from vandalism.  The Library consists of a literacy center with facilities for community programs, and a collection of books and literacy materials.  The Science Lab is a distinctive community resource, unlike any facility in our region.  It houses laboratory stations with counters, sinks, charts, equipment for experiments, computer stations, a projection system, safety equipment, measuring devices, and display cases; the type of equipment needed to provide outstanding learning opportunities for students, pre-professionals and credentialed teachers. The Computer Lab consists of 31 computers, a projection device, an interactive white board, digital movie production equipment, printers, and network connectivity.

All interior finish selections are composed of natural composition, anti-microbial and/or recycled materials containing low V.O.C. content. Hot water radiant heating with colored concrete floors are used throughout the Library.

Jurors said, “The different spaces invites community in for small learning activities, and that’s further enhanced by the reading nook by the fireplace. It’s a very warm, inviting and enriching space. It lends itself to exploration and discovery, and the spaces are in scale for the age groups.”
